What To Wear For your Engagement Photos

An Engagement Photos Style Guide

Planning Outfits for Couples Sessions.

Congratulations on your engagement! As you begin planning your engagement photoshoot, one crucial aspect to consider is the outfits you and your partner will wear. Your outfits can greatly influence the overall look and feel of your photos, so it's essential to choose wisely. Start by discussing your desired style and theme with your partner and decide what vibe you are going for. Are you going for a casual, romantic, or formal look? Consider coordinating your outfits without being too matchy-matchy. Complementing colors or patterns can create a visually appealing aesthetic. Additionally, choose outfits that make you feel CONFIDENT and COMFORTABLE. Remember, these photos will capture the essence of your love story, so pick outfits that reflect your personal style and relationship. By putting thought into your outfit choices, you'll ensure that your engagement photos are timeless and beautiful.

With all of that being said, I have also put together a guide to help couples plan their outfits for couples sessions!

  1. Keep it Simple

  2. Avoid being too trendy

  3. Stick to muted and neutral colors

  4. Use Pinterest

  5. Pick an Inspo Color palate

  6. Know it fits Well

  7. Avoid Patterns

  8. Be YOU.

Keep it Simple

It is a common to feel a lot of pressure to dress extravagantly for photoshoots, as there can be a lot of pressure around looking your best. Maybe you have thought about these pictures for years and now that its finally time for your engagement session you are experiencing decision paralysis. Or maybe you have never thought about this at all and have no idea where to start! It is easy to overthink what you should wear for your engagement photos. In my experience, it is actually better to keep outfits simple. The focus should be on YOU, not on the clothes you are wearing. By opting for more simple and understated attire, your personality and love can shine through and be the focus of the photos. It allows for a more natural and authentic representation, capturing genuine moments and emotions. So, instead of worrying about elaborate outfits, I recommend you choose outfits that make you feel comfortable and confident. Remember, the best photos are the ones that capture you as you truly are.

Avoid Being too Trendy

Avoiding trendy styles when selecting an outfit for your photoshoot is essential. While trends may seem fun and exciting, they can quickly become outdated, thus diminishing the timeless appeal of your photos. Opting for classic and timeless clothing choices will ensure that your images remain relevant and aesthetically pleasing for years to come. By steering clear of the latest fads, you can achieve a more enduring and elegant look that will stand the test of time.

Stick to Neutrals

Style is not the only thing that trends. Colors can also be trending. Remember in 2012 and teal and brown were super in? I think every other girl I knew had a teal and brown themed bedroom. It's best to stick to natural or neutral colors to avoid dating your photos. Color that you see in nature tend to be calming and allow the eye to focus on the people in the photograph. Neutrals also allow the focus to be on you! There are always exceptions to this rule though! If Neon is your jam and you like to match your neon yellow socks to your neon yellow shirt to your neon yellow Gatorade (calling out the cool guys from middle school) then you go for it! The most important thing is that you feel like yourself.

Use Pinterest

I LOVE PINTEREST!!! Pinterest is a fantastic platform for finding inspiration and ideas for engagement photo outfits. If you are more of a visual person, you can easily browse through different styles, themes, and color schemes to find the perfect outfit that reflects your personal style. Whether you're looking for something casual and romantic or formal and elegant, Pinterest offers a TON of options. My recommendation is to create your own Pinterest board and use it to craft your outfits! That is what Jake and I did when we were picking out our outfits for our engagement photos!

Pick an Inspo Color Palate

This tip works well for engagement photoshoots or for family photoshoots. I even used this tip when planning my family's photos for Jake and my wedding. Basically if you are trying to coordinate outfit colors it can be easier to find a color palate that you really love! A good place to look for a color palate is at a local hardware store paint section or on Pinterest. Once you have a color palate that you like, stick to it! You will find that it is really helpful in creating a cohesive look that isn't too matchy matchy.

Know it Fits WELL

Its the worst feeling when you go out for the night and you are wearing clothing that doesn't fit well or makes you feel uncomfortable. When it comes to your engagement photos, it is not the time to take a risk on that new and gutsy top that makes you feel incredibly constricted. Don't choose to wear the dress you can't breathe in or the pants that you can't bend over when wearing. Maybe it's true that pain is beauty, but being in pain does NOT make for beautiful photos. It's so important that you feel comfortable when we take pictures, so make sure that your clothes fit well!

Avoid Patterns or Graphics

Patterns and graphics can be really DISTRACTING! When the focus should be completely on you, I would hate for a graphic of mickey mouse to steal the show! Stick to clothing with solid colors and neutral tones as a good rule of thumb. This will help create a more clean and cohesive look.

Deciding what outfits to wear for your engagement photo shoot can be a bit overwhelming, but it's important to choose something that reflects your personal style and makes you feel comfortable. Another good rule of thumb is to avoid bold patterns and graphics and stick to solid neutral tones. Consider wearing complementary colors or that blend well together. Remember, the focus of the photos should be on you and your love story. This is not a fashion show, its the depiction of your love and the moments in which you decided to start your lives together. Pick clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident. Ultimately, the most important thing is to be yourselves and have fun during the shoot, as it will truly reflect the love and happiness you share as a couple.
